Are You Rewarding Distraction in Your Business?
You probably have this person on your team.
They’re friendly. They’re outgoing. They know everyone’s birthday, kids’ names, and weekend plans.
People love them.
And yet…
They’re always talking.
They interrupt workflows.
They pull others into conversations.
And as a business owner, you’re left wondering:
Are they helping the culture—or quietly hurting productivity?
Most leaders treat this as a personality issue.
“It’s just who they are.”
But that’s not the real problem.
This is an energy management issue inside your business.
Every company runs on:
- Work
- Systems
- Energy
And this employee influences more of that energy than you might realize.
At first glance, it seems harmless.
But over time, three things start to happen:
1. Productivity Drops
Quick conversations turn into long ones. Focus is constantly broken. Work takes longer than it should.
2. Noise Increases
When someone talks to everyone, they hear everything—and sometimes repeat it. Small issues become bigger than they need to be.
3. Boundaries Blur
Friendly turns into overly familiar. Work time turns into social time.
Most leaders either:
- Ignore it
or - Try to shut it down
Both approaches fail.
Because this employee brings real value.
They build connection.
They create belonging.
They carry culture.
The Real Question
Instead of asking:
“How do I get them to stop talking?”
Ask:
👉 Where does this strength belong in my business?
1. Create Structured Connection
Use them intentionally in onboarding or team engagement—with clear boundaries.
2. Align Their Role
Give them responsibilities that benefit from interaction, like customer or client touchpoints.
3. Coach Awareness
Help them understand the impact of their behavior without taking away what makes them effective.
The same behavior that creates distraction…
can also build culture.
The difference?
👉 Leadership.
If you don’t direct it, it becomes noise.
If you do, it becomes an asset.
